Yard’s summer of sport

With weeks of glorious sunshine, this summer offered both our offices a fantastic opportunity to spend time outdoors. We’ve been encouraging staff to get a bit more active, in addition to creating some fun, sports-inspired content for our clients. Keep reading to find out what we’ve been up to.

Yard Cardiff 10K

Cardiff 10K

On September 2nd, twelve members of the Cardiff ran the Cardiff 10K in aid of Kidney Wales, a foundation that invests in renal research, patient care and well-being, and actively works with and on behalf of kidney patients and their families across Wales. We’re very proud of our team, who not only smashed the 10K but also raised almost £300 for a great cause. A big congratulations to everyone that participated!

Walking Wednesdays

Research shows that getting away from your desk during lunch can increase productivity, improve mental well-being, and even boost creativity. As we’re all about being productive and creative, we’ve come up with a simple way to get our employees away from their desks – Walking Wednesdays. Every Wednesday, we head out from the Edinburgh office to walk the streets of our beautiful city and get some fresh air. The exercise helps us clear our heads and perform better when we get back to work.

World Cup Football

But our summer days weren’t just about getting physically active. We also produced some interactive sports campaigns. As the world tuned in to watch internationally renowned football, we got busy creating football-themed content. You can find out more about our adrenaline-fueled work below.

Who can forget this year’s epic World Cup? To celebrate the launch of the Big Bang Referee 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia, we created some pretty excellent interactive content for our client ROX. 90 Amazing Minutes features some of the best moments of World Cup action, with one from every minute of a memorable match to help you relive each moment of world-class footie. This campaign reviewed all the goals from the World Cup and determined that nearly 41% of goals were scored in the 51st minute. We also discovered that 21% of goals are scored in the final minutes, proving that it’s worth watching every single minute of World Cup football!

Mark Anderson, Content and Campaigns Manager at Yard said of the content; “90 Amazing Minutes builds on Hublot’s role as the official timekeeper of the tournament. The content ties together the precise timing of the greatest moments from the last 88 years of World Cup action and showcases them in an intuitive, engaging format that football fans will love.”

Our campaign received some fantastic media attention, with features in The Drum and Fife Today.

Table tennis tournament

We thrive on a bit of friendly competition at Yard and ping pong has always been a fun way for us to relax after a busy workday, so launching a table tennis tournament seemed like a no-brainer. The Edinburgh and Cardiff offices are currently competing to find their champions. Once the champions are found, our offices will face off in the ultimate Yardie match.

On August 30th, Mark Anderson and Jeff Hutchinson from our Edinburgh team participated in the Big Hearts 3rd Annual Golf Day at Turnhouse Golf Course. It was a fantastic day of Texas Scramble. Competition was fierce on the field, with many well-known sports teams in attendance including Fife Flyers of the Elite Hockey League as well as former professional footballers.

The Yard team came in at 5 under par (gross), which was enough to see us get close to the prizes. Afterwards, Mark and Jeff enjoyed a delicious lunch and got to learn about some of Big Hearts’ great work. All proceeds from the event went to the charity, which helps families in need. Great work Mark and Jeff!

Scottish Football Memories

This summer, our client DC Thomson released Lifted Over the Turnstiles, a book featuring some of Scotland’s most loved and cherished football grounds. To promote the release, we ran a competition, asking fans to share their favourite Scottish football memory for the chance to win a copy of the book. We had some great responses like our own Head of SEO and Content Barry Begg, who said his favourite moment was Ally McCoist’s diving header against Leeds in the Battle of Britain.

Our design and content team then used these memories to create an interactive campaign, Scottish Football Memories. Whether it was Hearts winning the Scottish cup final in 1998 or the legendary Lisbon Lions winning the European Cup at the Estádio Nacional in 1967, there’s certainly a lot to celebrate! This campaign really made us feel the Scottish pride and has been used by Football Memories Dementia Groups, which use images and memorabilia to stimulate memories among people with dementia who have an interest in football.
