Meet the Yardies – Sonny & Courtney

21st August 2019 by Scott McPate | News & Events

Last month we caught up with Francois and Abbie and now we have two more Yardies to get to know. From the Cardiff office this month we have Data Scientist, Sonny Driscoll, and from Edinburgh, we have our Outreach Executive, Courtney Johnson, answer some questions.

Yard is an award-winning agency based in Edinburgh and Cardiff and it’s good to get to know the people behind the scenes that make the agency tick.

Sonny Driscoll - Data Scientist

How long have you worked at Yard?
8 months.

What office and team are you based in?

I’m based in the Cardiff office in the Data Science Team. We’re working with Cardiff Met University on a Research and Innovation project.

Recommend a TV series that we all need to watch!
Startup (on Amazon Prime)

What’s your favourite or most memorable ad/marketing campaign?
John Smiths Peter Kay adverts are the first thing that springs to mind!

Describe what your typical day looks like from start to finish.
My time at Yard so far has been focused on building a single product, so I’m currently working on that. Many of the tasks I complete daily involve working with data sources to obtain, clean and store data that we will be using for the product. I also assist with other data science research activities when required.

What projects are you working on at the moment?
I’m focused on delivering a new predictive analytics solution for SEO, using Data Science and Neural Networks.

What’s the best thing about your job?
For my role, I enjoy being ‘hands-on’ with the tech and using Python, which has definitely helped me build my skill set. In terms of Yard as a whole, the people here are great and there’s a good culture in the office, so I never dread going to work.

What’s the biggest challenge you face in your job?
Currently, it has been working with some unpredictable data and cleaning that to ensure we can utilise it correctly for the use case we are working on. At times it has been very challenging but at the same time a great learning process.

When I’m not at work, I…
Try to keep fit so I go to the gym or do something active most days. I also like to go out for food as often as I can, take my dog out to the beach or cook at home. I’m also partial to a night or day out socialising.

What are your five top tracks of the moment?
Big Love (David Penn Remix)
Deeper (Gorgon City Remix)
Space Rider (MJ Cole Vocal Mix)
Mac Miller – Self Care
Mac Miller – Dang

Courtney Johnson - Outreach Executive

How long have you worked at Yard?
Almost 5 months.

What office and team are you based in?
Edinburgh, SEO and Content.

Recommend a TV series that we all need to watch!
I’m a huge fan of The Office (US version, sorry!), Parks and Rec, Stranger Things. I just finished watching Big Little Lies and I highly recommend it!

What’s your favourite or most memorable ad/marketing campaign?
I love a good Superbowl ad, so my most memorable one would have to be Snickers “You’re not you when you’re hungry.”

Describe what your typical day looks like from start to finish
The day usually begins catching up in the morning with the team about what needs to be completed, and from there my day is usually a mix of sending emails, writing copy, sourcing sites and outreaching content.

What projects are you working on at the moment?
I’m currently working on outreaching pet content around pet awareness days and doing backlink analysis for other clients.

What’s the best thing about your job?
Being able to do a variety of work with different clients makes each day interesting.

What’s the biggest challenge you face in your job?
Staying on top of different projects can be challenging.

When I’m not at work, I…
I’m at a yoga or spin class and rewarding myself with chocolate after.

What are your five top tracks of the moment?
Old Town Road (Lil Nas x ft Billy Rae Cyrus), Bad Guy (Billie Eilish), Beggin For Thread (Banks) and anything country.
