Meet the Yardies – Phil & Lewis

21st June 2019 by Scott McPate | News & Events

In May we met Ajay and Shannon, and this month we’ve got another two Yardies to get to know. This month we have Phil Treen, one of our Web Developers based in Cardiff, and Lewis Bonar our new content executive from Edinburgh, answer a few questions.

Based in Edinburgh and Cardiff, we’re an award-winning agency, and we want you to meet the people that are integral to our success.

Phil Treen - Web Developer

Name or what you like to be called:

Any variation on my second name. Treen or Treeno.

What office are you based in?

Cardiff office

What team are you in?

Development & Innovation

How long have you worked at Yard?

Three years as of May 16th this year.

Recommend a TV series that we all need to watch!

Won’t push the usual buttons, but the mini-series about Chernobyl on Sky Atlantic has been on the box recently … it’s pretty dark in tone, so not for everyone. On the lighter side though, I would recommend Good Omens on Amazon Prime, it’s a lot of fun and has buckets of charm.

What’s your favourite or most memorable ad/marketing campaign?

The old ‘You’ve been Tango’d’ advert and the original Legend of Zelda; Ocarina of Time advert. Both of which probably wouldn’t float by today’s politically correct standards but are brilliant none the less. The former for generally just being a bit wacky and absurd and the latter for provoking a reaction and getting people talking – ‘Willst thou get the girl, or play like one?’.

Describe what your typical day looks like from start to finish.

Differs from day to day but it keeps you on your toes. Normally I’ll log on, check my emails, catch up with any work that may involve myself or require something from me and then proceed to carry on with ongoing tasks. These can be anything from minor or major fixes to tracking on client websites, calls with clients, or assisting the analytics consultants with queries.

What projects are you working on at the moment?

I’m currently the main developer on the tag management system migration for Sainsbury’s Bank.

What’s the best thing about your job?

I’m in a fortunate enough position to say a lot of things – the office is great, the people I work with are amazing, the vibe is good and the general culture Yard has sustained and built on over the years is getting better.

What’s the biggest challenge you face in your job?

The very same thing that makes it interesting – every day is different. Often thrown into the deep end, I have to adapt to a situation quickly. It’s not a sink or swim mentality as your colleagues are always happy to help but it’s up to you get it done really.

When I’m not at work, I…

Like to keep active. I box, take my dog out for a walk, run, play guitar, take on extracurricular programming courses when and go out with mates.

What are your five top tracks of the moment?

No particular order …

  • Into Happiness – Phantogram.
  • Howling At The Moon – Phantogram.
  • Practice – DJ Jazzy Jeff feat. J Live.
  • A Lot Like Sin – Mark Tremonti.
  • I Will Remember – Doyle Bramhall ll.

Lewis Bonar - Outreach Executive

Name or what you like to be called

Lewis

What office are you based in?

Edinburgh

What team are you in?

Outreach

How long have you worked at Yard?

Oh, around 4 weeks or so.

Recommend a TV series that we all need to watch!

I’ll keep it topical and suggest Chernobyl – it’s well worth the watch.

What’s your favourite or most memorable ad/marketing campaign?

I find ads from Paddy Power effective and light-hearted.

Describe what your typical day looks like from start to finish.

I’m new to the Yard team so still in the learning process stage I suppose. Although my day-to-day usually consists of sourcing and outreach-based activity.

What projects are you working on at the moment?

Since starting, I’ve been mostly working on the various Sainsbury’s Bank content but recently I have done some sourcing and outreach for Sage and VisitScotland.

What’s the best thing about your job?

The location and office are cool, and I suppose I better say that my colleagues are cool to work with as well.

What’s the biggest challenge you face in your job?

At this moment, the challenge is getting to know how everything works but it’s an enjoyable challenge.

When I’m not at work, I…

I’m up to all sorts of nonsense. That’s a lie, it’s not that exciting. I play Football and a load of Golf.

What are your five top tracks of the moment?

  • Sol P – This Must be Home
  • Sol P – Harlem World
  • Loyle Carner – Ottolenghi
  • Jordan Rakei – Midnight Mischief
  • Sister Sledge – Thinking of you (Dimitri from Paris Remix)
