Meet the Yardies – Beth and Lauren

20th September 2019 by Scott McPate | News & Events

Last month we caught up with Sonny and Courtney and now we have two more Yardies to get to know. From the Cardiff office this month we have Beth Williams and from Edinburgh we have Lauren Poole answer a few questions.

Yard is an award-winning agency based in Edinburgh and Cardiff and it’s good to get to know the people behind the scenes that make the agency tick.

Beth Williams

What office and team are you based in?
I am based in the Cardiff office and I’m part of the Data Science team.

Recommend a TV series that we all need to watch!
I’ve not long discovered Brassic on Sky. It’s so clever and just hilarious.

What’s your favourite or most memorable ad/marketing campaign?
One of my all-time favourites was the T-Mobile welcome home advert at Heathrow Airport. It looks wonderful and was very cleverly done.

As the RWC is nearly upon us, I think the 6 Nations advert should get a mention too!

Describe what your typical day looks like from start to finish.
I usually start by looking through my emails and seeing where I left my tasks from the previous day. Depending on my current projects and which clients I am working with, I’ll either be experimenting with data in SQL or having a play with new packages in R.

What projects are you working on at the moment?
I am currently analysing how quick fixes and CRO (Conversion Rate Optimisation) implementations are affecting user interactions with different clients sites and products. I am also researching and experimenting with machine learning and neural networks to create a model that will predict the glass ceiling of a page.

What’s the best thing about your job?
It’s constantly changing. Every day I come across something new, it’s challenging but exciting. It enables me to test myself and be creative utilising my love of statistics and coding. The people here are great and everyone made me feel so welcome from the start. They got me a graduation present after only being here a month! The culture here is lovely.

What’s the biggest challenge you face in your job?

Technology is always advancing meaning a lot of trial and error before something works in the way you want it to. This can be a long process but it really helps me develop in my role.

When I’m not at work, I…
I try to keep fit so I can be found lying on the floor in the gym. If I’m not there I’m swimming or walking my dog. I’ve not long finished university so I try to catch up with my course mates, I never say no to a pub catch up. I am also trying to teach my housemate the rules of rugby which is an interesting challenge.

What are your five top tracks of the moment?
I listen to everything.
All of Dermot Kennedy
Hamilton Soundtrack
Must have been the wind – Alec Benjamin
Take me back to London – Ed Sheehan ft Stormzy
3 Nights – Dominic Fike

Lauren Poole

What office and team are you based in?
I’m based in Edinburgh office, despite being born and raised in Cardiff. I’m in the Content team.

Recommend a TV series that we all need to watch!
I think everyone should watch Mad Men, it’s the most visually pleasing series you’ll ever watch.

What’s your favourite or most memorable ad/marketing campaign?
When I think of advertising, I instantly think of Levi Strauss vintage commercials. They ooze coolness and make me instantly want to wear my Levi’s. I really like their latest campaign – ‘Live in Levi’s’, which show the diversity of the brand’s audience.

Describe what your typical day looks like from start to finish.
A typical day for me starts with a coffee whilst I check over emails and write my to-do list. Throughout the day it’ll be a mix of planning campaigns, writing copy and working with freelancers on various content projects.

What projects are you working on at the moment?
We’ve got a few projects on the go but one I’m most excited about is a campaign focusing on Pets at Weddings. It’s going to be pawsome.

What’s the best thing about your job?
I really enjoy how creative the role can be and the variety of day to day tasks. No day feels the same and it’s really fun coming up with fresh concepts to help clients.

What’s the biggest challenge you face in your job?
As I’m still relatively new to the team, I’d say getting to know the Yardie way – learning all the processes and systems.

When I’m not at work, I…
As I’m still fresh to Edinburgh I spend a lot of my time exploring and discovering new restaurants that I can eat my way through. Most recently went to The Pitt in Leith, a must try! I also don’t think it’s a weekend unless you’ve had a nap at some point…

What are your five top tracks of the moment?
In no particular order…
Dope Lemon – Marinade
Nilufer Yanya – Sliding Doors
Palace – Face In The Crowd
Loyle Carner – Loose Ends
Sufjan Stevens – Mystery of Love
