It’s that time of year again! We love heading to Corpus Christi High School every year for BIMA’s Digital Day (take a look at our previous write ups of our 2015 and 2016 Digital Days) and 2017 was no exception. This year we handed the reigns of documenting the experience over to our new Technical Project Manager Georgia.

Who knew returning to school could be so much fun? Well, thanks to BIMA’s Digital Day initiative and Corpus Christi High School’s enthusiastic and hardworking students that was made a reality for us Yardies!
A day spent thinking up creative and initiative solutions to three separate challenges encouraged the students (and our team) to get their thinking caps on and dream up some outside of the box ideas.
The BIMA challenges we presented the students with consisted of:
Powered up Pets
Whether it’s a dog, cat, bird, hamster or reptile, owning a pet is fun but can be hard work.
Create an innovative digital product or service for customers of LV= pet insurance that could help pet owners to keep their pets healthy, make pet ownership more social and/or take some of the hassle out of owning a pet.
The Powered up Pets group was led by our new Tester Yogesh.
Artificial intelligence (AI), virtual reality (VR) and robotics no longer belong to the realms of science fiction and will increasingly become part of our daily lives and the wider world.
Imagine a way that digital advancements such as these could be used to improve one of the following two aspects of school life:
- This week is Anti Bullying Week. Imagine a way that technology could be used to reduce bullying in school and online or encourage others to stand up to bullying.
- Classrooms of the future. How could digital technologies improve your school or your learning experience?
The Smart Schools group was led by one of our Web Developers – Tom.
Fashion of the Future
When it comes to digital advancements, fashion and beauty have always been ahead of the game. Wearable technology is quickly advancing, and examples of this technology include gloves that can create music, necklaces that vibrate when you get a text and accessories such as Apple Watch, Fitbit, Google Glass and Snapchat Spectacles.
Create a piece of wearable technology that would solve a problem that you, your family or friends face in everyday life.
This group was led by me!
Throughout the day the students learned new things about the many abilities of technology (and its boundaries – yes, it is highly unlikely that you will be able to carry a fridge around in your handbag!)
With the guidance of the Yardies the students learned about new technologies such as RFID chips, GPS and Bluetooth, basic AI constructs and how to create a good logo! The students showed fab initiative, team dynamics, compromising skills and, most importantly, a variety of both simple and wild ideas and concepts.
The feedback received was brilliant with some of the students wishing to come back next year, and others talking about having a future role in the IT industry -goal of the day officially achieved, we think.
As well as the opportunity to think big and get creative, the students also had to present their ideas to their classmates, Team Yard and their teacher – providing them with a great opportunity to practice their public speaking in an informal and fun environment. Each student had a go at speaking and, in some cases, demonstrating their ideas.
All in all, this was a brilliant day to raise awareness of technological possibilities and show the students that technology can be fun. We are looking forward to next year’s Digital Day already and wish the best of luck to our groups – fingers crossed we end up with a winning idea!
